This position is specifically seeking a mechanical engineer/designer to join a unique, ground breaking, science mission. Ideally, this individual will have experience with program management to include producing schedules, and financial planning/tracking. The role will focus on research, analysis, design and development of space or airborne payload structures and precision mechanisms supporting multiple programs and IRAD and CRAD efforts. Support includes research and design of advanced pointing and stabilization systems for spacecraft and payloads, including actuators, sensors, and electronics, and the design and development of test beds and related facilities to demonstrate pointing and stabilization system performance. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience with precision mechanism system design and analysis, an understanding of payload mechanical and thermal interfaces, an understanding of operational and survival environments (thermal, shock, vibrations), and work well in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment.
Basic Qualifications:
– Experience and practical knowledge of design and test of space or airborne payload with payload pointing or stabilization systems and structures or mechanisms or sensors and actuators.
– Experience in design, build, and/or test of precision mechanisms from concept to demonstration.
– Experience with SolidWorks and/or CREO 3D parametric tools.
– Solid understanding of mechanisms including shock, stress, and vibrations.
– Solid understanding of rigid and flexible body dynamics and structural vibrations.
– Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
Desired Skills:
– Experience working with subcontractors and/or supply chain.
– Practical experience with design of high-dimensional stability structures.
– Practical knowledge of passive and/or active vibration isolation systems.
– Practical knowledge of design and deployment of pneumatic systems.
– Practical knowledge of design and deployment of gimbals and associated motor drives and bearings.
– Practical experience with designing for manufacturing and producibility.
– Practical knowledge of additive manufacturing.
– Practical knowledge of optical mounts and alignment fixtures.
– Practical knowledge of Structural Thermal Optical (STOP) analysis.

Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Schedule for this Position: 4×10 hour day, 3 days off per week
Pay Rate:
The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Washington or Washington DC is $100,400 – $192,500. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate’s final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.

PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
