The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. We are hiring a Senior Systems Engineer for the development of operational concepts for systems enhancements and to provide systems engineering support for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mission. In this role, a Senior Systems Engineer will also provide support to integration and testing activities as part of the larger systems engineering team and necessary technical implementations to reduce overall mission risk.
A Systems Engineer in this role is knowledgeable in systems engineering processes and practices with familiarity with software engineering, spacecraft hardware and/or operations (preferred), and has familiarity with systems integration processes.
This is a phenomenal opportunity to interact with engineering and science groups working on the operations of the James Webb (JWST), Hubble (HST) and Nancy Grace Roman Space (Roman) Space Telescopes.
Responsibilities include:
Our systems engineers support all phases of the Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and perform in a variety of roles to support system design, product realization and technical management using the NASA Systems Engineering Handbook as a guide. We look at all facets of a System (or System of Systems) to include people, process, and product.
The work performed by systems engineers contributes meaningfully in strengthening our engineering processes while supporting multi-mission operational systems to HST, JWST and/or Roman. They work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to provide systems engineering support with a focus on Flight Operations Subsystem support (including but not limited to requirements management, flight software maintenance facilities interface control documentation) and input to our Science Operations.
Qualifications:
We are looking for Senior Engineer candidates (experience 10+ years) with the following academic and work experience and abilities:
Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace, Software Engineering, or Systems Engineering, or another technically related field. Academic training in systems or software engineering, space systems, software development or in relevant fields such as astronomy, physics, or mathematics.

The salary range for this position is between $115k – $140k. Substitution of additional relevant education and/or experience for stated qualifications may be considered. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.
