The Aerospace Corporation is hiring a Graduate-level Nondestructive Intern.
The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a diverse scientific organization that provides a broad and innovative research and development backplane for a growing space enterprise. The Materials Science Department (MSD) in the Space Materials Laboratory at The Aerospace Corporation conducts anomaly resolution, correlation of materials physics to materials performance, nondestructive evaluation, materials characterization, failure analysis, and applied research in materials science, additive manufacturing, nondestructive evaluation technologies for space applications and provides technical support to national security space programs in these areas. The MSD is seeking a Nondestructive Graduate Intern; a well-qualified individual with a strong foundation in materials physics, nondestructive evaluation, and data acquisition which focuses on ultrasonic, X-ray, and eddy current measurement technologies. The section’s research and customer program support activities are well-established and supported by highly trained and accomplished staff.

What You’ll Be Doing

Graduate intern will be working in the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) section of the Materials Science Department (MSD) researching ultrasonic, X-ray or eddy current technologies to evaluate defects, microstructure properties, and materials characterization

Ultrasonic testing measurements, X-ray measurements, or computational modeling and simulation of NDE techniques
-
Correlating material properties to the additive manufacturing process and resulting microstructures
-
Resolve design and test issues/anomalies/challenges
-
Data acquisition and analysis
-
Offer technical consultation to MSD team members and management
-
Develop and assess design and analysis criteria, requirements, and specifications for launch and space vehicle hardware
-
Maintain state-of-the-art skills in activities related to experimental design, evaluation data evaluation, AM builds
-
Communicate with personnel within PSL and between organizations within Engineering, Technology Group
-
Coordinate and actively engage with nondestructive evaluation colleagues on joint projects
-
Prepare written and oral reports of research activities and accomplishments, and present to higher management, internal colleagues and the broader scientific community

Contribute to MSD technical projects by hands-on nondestructive evaluation methods including, but not limited to, ultrasonic and eddy current technologies.

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:

Currently enrolled fulltime in an ABET accredited college/university program pursuing a Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or related discipline

Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks outside of university term and ability to return to a degree program full-time after completion of the internship.

Minimum GPA 3.0

Relevant coursework in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, additive manufacturing, metallurgy, NDE, computational modeling
-
Skills surrounding materials science, nondestructive evaluation, metallurgy, microstructure analysis, or material characterization
-
Willingness to occasionally travel domestically and work off-business hours to support customer needs
-
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
How You Can Stand Out

Interest in gaining knowledge in nondestructive evaluation, additive manufacturing, materials property measurements

Hands-on experience with ultrasonic testing, X-ray measurements, eddy current measurement and testing, conducting computational modeling and simulation of NDE techniques, image analysis

Hands-on experience with materials processing, including composite layup and CNC milling
-
Experience in Python, C++, LabVIEW, SolidWorks, InspectionWare, CIVA, or MATLAB programming

Records on publishing technical paper or delivering conference presentations

Demonstrated ability to independently work technical assignments

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
