Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup and play a critical role in the development and operation of our cutting-edge satellite technology. We are seeking a skilled and innovative Electronics Control Engineer to design, develop, and maintain the electronic control systems that manage the various subsystems of our satellites, which are operating in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO).
In this role, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the reliability and performance of our satellite missions, contributing to the success of our pioneering air-breathing electric propulsion system.
About NewOrbit Space
NewOrbit is pioneering the development of the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO). Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications, but it requires a propulsion system that can counteract drag from atmospheric particles. Our mission is to harness these particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these challenging orbits.
Please note that this is not a regular 9-5 job, but that we are an early stage start-up.
Responsibilities:

Control System Design: Lead the design and development of electronic control systems for satellite subsystems, including power distribution, communication, thermal management, and payload operations.

Circuit and Firmware Development: Design electronic circuits and develop firmware for microcontrollers and FPGAs, ensuring they meet the stringent requirements of space missions in terms of radiation tolerance, power efficiency, and reliability.

Power Management: Develop and manage the satellite’s power distribution network, including battery management systems to optimize charging, discharging, and health monitoring.

Telemetry and Command Systems: Design and implement electronics for the satellite’s telemetry and command systems, ensuring reliable communication with ground control and accurate execution of commands.

Thermal Control: Design and manage electronic systems for satellite temperature control, integrating heaters, radiators, and thermal sensors to maintain optimal operating conditions.

Autonomous Control: Develop fault detection and correction systems that allow the satellite to autonomously respond to anomalies, ensuring mission resilience through redundancy and robust control strategies.

Integration and Testing: Integrate electronic control systems with other satellite subsystems, conducting rigorous testing under simulated space conditions (thermal vacuum, vibration, and radiation testing) to validate system performance.

Operational Support: Provide ongoing mission support, including troubleshooting, data analysis, and system updates based on real-time telemetry data to ensure continued optimal performance.
Fundamental Requirements:

Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Industry Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in designing and developing electronic control systems, with a strong preference for experience in satellite or aerospace applications.

Technical Expertise: Proficiency in circuit design, microcontroller and FPGA programming, and power management systems. Strong knowledge of telemetry, command systems, and thermal management in satellite environments.

Programming Skills: Experience in programming languages such as C/C++, VHDL/Verilog for FPGA development, and familiarity with simulation tools and environments.

System Integration: Proven experience in integrating electronic control systems with other satellite subsystems, and in conducting environmental testing for space applications.

Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities with a solid understanding of control systems, electronics, and space mission dynamics.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise documentation and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Application Process
Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
