OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
This occupation requires the complete set-up and operation of the following precision and standard power machines: Duplicating, horizontal boring mill, jig borer, lathe, milling machine, planer and precision grinder; the planning, layout, machining and assembly to precision tolerances of parts and tools developed to meet research standards and specification.
WORK PERFORMED
Must be able to and normally does perform the following duties:
Set-up and operate above machine tools and metal fabricating machines, to completely and independently perform any operation within their capacity.
Layout, machine fabricate and assemble to exacting tolerances or extremely close dimensions, intricate precision parts and assemblies, sheet metal items and shop tooling devices, including small dies, jigs and fixtures incidental to work being performed.
Work from sketches or verbal instructions in fabricating and assembling completely to exacting tolerances small intricate assemblies, requiring extreme care to insure proper adjustments, clearances, alignments and coordination.
As required, perform hand and honing operations on surfaces, bores and pivots to finest tolerances and surface specifications.
As required, operate power-forming or cutting equipment in working and forming sheet metal stock to desired specifications and characteristics.
In addition to the above duties, perform the following representative duties:
Perform bench work finishing, assembling and fitting. Perform precision grinding operations on cutting tools and parts.
Work from complex detail blueprints, sketches, templates, master models or verbal instructions, and use precision-gauge instruments in projecting and laying out angular and linear dimensions.
Perform rework wherein the operations are essentially the same as required for the work described above.
TYPICAL MATERIALS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Materials worked on: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys; non-metallic materials; new unproven materials.
Materials worked with: Layout dye, cerrobend, lubricants and cutting oils, solvents, screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, parts and accessories.
Tools used: Mechanics’ hand tools, precision measuring instruments, gauges, form blocks, templates, jigs and fixtures, levels, portable drills, and special fabricating metal fitting and assembly tools.
Equipment used: Precision and standard power machines and equipment such as:
Bench lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, jig borers, drill presses, power and hand saws, hydraulic jacks, sheet metal hand and power fabrication machines,
engraving machine and internal-external cylindrical grinder.
Basic Qualifications:
• Must possess a complete knowledge of machine shop theory, practice and procedure; advanced shop mathematics.
• Use precision measuring instruments to verify in-process hardware to required tolerances and dimensions.
• Have a good knowledge of sheet metal operations.
• Must be able to set-up completely and operate all basic types of machine tools, as required.
• Ability to apply a comprehensive knowledge of shop techniques necessary to work metals to required specifications without conventional tooling, when required.
• To read and interpret complex engineering blueprints and assembly drawings.
• To work from incomplete engineering verbal, written and sketch information.
• May be required to have proper classification of commercial driver’s license required by the State of Florida to operate material handling equipment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.
Desired Skills:
• Machinists and tool and die makers set up and operate equipment to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools
Working from engineering drawings developed by engineers lay out the design on the raw material (usually metal), then cut it to size and shape using manually controlled machine tools (such as lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and jig grinders), power tools (such as die grinders and rotary tools), and hand tools (such as files and honing stones).
