Position Description

 

Voyager Space Exploration is seeking a Payload Safety Engineer. The Payload Safety Engineer is responsible for coordinating with Payload Developers for safety-related issues and processes, ensuring that safety processes are completed for flight and payload safety hazard report closure. The goal of this position is to ensure flight certification for payloads and to make certain that payloads meet safety requirements for both governmental and commercial customers.

 

Essential Duties

 

Safety Compliance

  1. Review Payload Data and develop Payload Safety Data Packages.
  2. Coordinate with the Payload Developer to acquire data necessary for safety compliance.
  3. Develop Payload Safety Hazard Reports and ensure their closure.
  4. Conduct reviews with Safety Review Panels.
  5. Provide detailed reports and recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  6. Prepare and present technical presentations.
  7. Review documents, operational scenarios, and subsequent changes for safety impact.
  8. Investigate and understand all payload systems for assigned hardware, including electrical, mechanical, thermal and other engineering disciplines as necessary.
  9. Ensure appropriate industrial/facility safety practices are in place and actively monitored.
  1. Participate in reviews, forums, and technical interchange meetings for payload safety issues.

Competencies

 

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in engineering, systems engineering, or science required.

 

Experience:

  • Required
    1.  3-10 years direct payload safety experience with working knowledge with mechanical, electrical, and structural systems, and reading
    2. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and electrical schematics.

 

  • Preferred
    1. Broad-based engineering experience in all major disciplines and involvement in payload development or designs is preferred.
    2. Experience in systems engineering or the ability to learn to apply systems engineering principles to payloads with multi-discipline configurations is preferred.

Physical Requirements

 

  1. The work is sedentary, requiring low levels of physical activity. A candidate should be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met. 
  2. The workplace operates under core working hours as defined by company policy. However, work schedules may vary based on business needs.  If a schedule needs to be changed, managers will notify their employees.  
  3. The work requires close visual acuity to perform activities. A candidate should be able to do the following activities without issue: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes; operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment. 
  4. The work will require the employee to make repetitive motions and manipulate objects using their arms, hands, and fingers. The employee will be required to express and exchange ideas using spoken instructions accurately, loudly, and quickly. The employee will also need to discriminate sound at normal speaking levels without correction and can receive detailed information through oral communications.
