Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Colorado Springs, CO.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.
C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.
This position is for a Principal Software Engineer developing test and training simulations for the C2BMC program. The candidate will be a member of an Agile Scrum Team responsible for software development in Java. Under appropriate direction, provides updates to multiple systems and software disciplines.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products
- Works from specifications to develop new simulation entities and/or extend development frameworks to support new entity behaviors
- Responsible for performing analysis and technical support of systems software products, including problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support, by leveraging general knowledge of related disciplines, applications implications, and customer areas
- Assist with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs. Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the overall efficiency of the operating system
- Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operations automation
- Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require instruction and guidance in other phases
Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related experience, or 1 year with a PhD, or 9 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
- Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% to support business needs
- Experience with Java and/or C++ software development (Java preferred)
- Understanding of TCP/IP and Pub/Sub usage within simulation contexts
- Software engineering and software development with strong Java experience (C++ and Matlab)
- Must have experience developing and working with simulation frameworks for both test and training use cases
- Required knowledge of basic software practices such as:
- Coding standards
- Configuration management
- Must have the ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) or similar experience is a plus
- Experience developing enterprise applications using:
- Eclipse
- Visual Studio Code
- Maven development environments
- Familiarity with Java foundation classes and toolkits
- Spring development experience
- Interest in simulation entity development and simulation control user interfaces
- Flexibility and willingness to take on unanticipated tasks are highly desirable

Salary Range: $100,300.00 – $150,500.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
