Position Description

Voyager Space Exploration is seeking a Vice President of Engineering. This role is responsible for leading the Engineering Department of Voyager Space Exploration while also improving the efficiency of engineering tasks through processes and procedures. They are responsible for the governance, oversight, and performance of engineering tasks at the company, in addition to managing projects themselves when needed. Principally, this person will oversee, develop, and ensure the performance of the practice of engineering at the company. They will manage multi-functional teams, subcontractors, and interface with employees at all levels to ensure that the company’s growing service offerings, ranging from small satellites to pressurized and un-pressurized microgravity payloads, are successful.

Essential Duties

Engineering Management:  

1. Provides technical leadership at the engineering level and serves as a stakeholder to project management and business development with respect to project completions, bidding, and contracts. 
2. Ensures all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization’s established policies and objectives.  
3. Oversees all aspects of engineering operations and ensures efficient integrated resource scheduling to maintain critical path and all contractual project/contract milestones as agreed to with business line leadership.  
4. Monitors reliability and performance of the engineering department. 
5. Coordinates activities with Operations to ensure optimized flow between engineering and other departments. 
6. Prepares all required engineering reports and correspondence. 
7. Provides technical guidance to engineering teams and top management.  
8. Manages and maintains accountability for the Engineering Department budget  

1. Propose, maintain, and report department key performance indicators (KPIs)

Engineering Development: 

1. Collaborates with management in setting and driving engineering vision and strategy. 
2. Develops processes, procedures, and best practices to ensure engineering efficiency. 
3. Incorporates components, materials, and tools that result in cost-effective and quality output.  
4. Creates functional engineering strategies and specific objectives that align with the organization’s mission.  
5. Assures knowledge capture and maintains proficiency/competence standards and state of art capabilities to efficiently execute and complete work plans.

Competencies

Education: 

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university required in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or chemical engineering, or physics, materials science, computer science/engineering, or mathematics. 
• Master’s degree or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

• Required 
  1. Minimum 15 years’ experience required in engineering and engineering leadership. 
  2. Minimum 5 years’ work experience in space. [RS1] [TB2] 
  3. Leadership experience managing multi-functional and geographically distributed teams with proven success operating in a matrix environment required.
  4. Experience participating in Sales & BD support activities, such as scoping and costing.

• Preferred
  1. Experience working with government and commercial aerospace customers and a familiarity with launch vehicles and/or payload development strongly preferred. 
  2. Experience working with CubeSats, Small Satellites, on-orbit facilities, or any other platforms or payloads designed for operation in space (design, build, test, analysis, launch, operation, etc.) preferred. 
  3. Experience with or ability to understand and/or conduct technical analysis products with structural, thermal, and orbital mechanics preferred.

Physical Requirements

1. The work is sedentary, requiring low levels of physical activity. A candidate should be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
2. The workplace operates under core working hours as defined by company policy. However, work schedules may vary based on business needs.  If a schedule needs to be changed, managers will notify their employees.
3. The work requires close visual acuity to perform activities. A candidate should be able to do the following activities without issue: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes; operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
4. The work will require the employee to make repetitive motions and manipulate objects using their arms, hands, and fingers. The employee will be required to express and exchange ideas using spoken instructions accurately, loudly, and quickly. The employee will also need to discriminate sound at normal speaking levels without correction and can receive detailed information through oral communications.
